Susan Main uses painting, drawing, video and projection to explore individual and social contracts between space, time and attention, pairing the unmediated event with tools that attempt to measure, define, locate and orient. She received an MFA in Painting from the University of Maryland at College Park and an MFA in Interactive Media and Digital Arts from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Her paintings and drawings have been exhibited nationally including selected solo exhibitions at the Hosfelt Gallery (San Francisco) and the Peng Gallery (Philadelphia). Awards include a Juror’s Merit Award in the New American Talent exhibition juried by Lisa Phillips, a Full Fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center and the RTKL Fellowship in 2008. A current collaboration with artists in Afghanistan involves live and recorded video/audio exchanges of small, measured plots of ground, sky and everyday activities. Main’s work is in numerous collections including Reuters (San Francisco). She is a Curatorial Consultant for The Metropolitan Center for the Arts (VisArts) and teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art. In January 2013, Main will present new work in a solo exhibition entitled, “The Usual Wilderness,” at the Hillyer Art Center, Washington, D.C.
