About the author

Phoenix Joy Marie Savage is a native of Philadelphia, PA. Savage is the recipient of the Being Human’s fellowship from the Institute for Arts and Humanities at Penn State University, 2012-2013 as well as the J. William Fulbright Fellowship 2010-2011. Savage completed prior graduate work at both Northwestern State University in Louisiana majoring in Sculpture, as well as holding a graduate degree in Medical Anthropology received from the University of Mississippi. Savage holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Georgia State University, with a concentration in cast Iron Sculpture. Savage is the artist behind the critically acclaimed Human Touch Project that continues Savage’s explorations of aesthetically expressing the relationships between human and ethereal connectivity. The Human Touch Project investigates and addresses the invisible space that exists when human beings connect by way of a simple touch. The synergy and emotionality imbedded in the initial touch is carried forth in subsequent human touches playing of off notions of palimpsest concepts. Savage has lectured at Georgia State University, Northwestern State University, Obafemi Awolowo University and Penn State University. Phoenix is the co-author of two outstanding books, entitled African Americans of Jackson, and African Americans of New Orleans. Savage exhibits her works nationally, and internationally.
