My work is deeply, socially conscious, drawn from the rich artistic heritage of my people the Benins in Nigeria, and my experiences as an immigrant. After years as an artist, activist, City Council candidate and public servant in New York City, I recognize that we all have common threads.

Currently, I am exploring rope, paper and video, including working with found objects. Life in America has caused me to notice the polarizing nature of rope made into a noose and its historical meaning. Rope remains an ugly symbol of the American past and yet is highly accessible. Something so simple and ordinary can mean so much in a different context. The material I've chosen to work with also has a lot of presence. I was drawn to it at first because of its tactile quality. It's amazing how we can re-purpose such things.
