Rita Blitt, international award winning painter/sculptor/filmmaker, has been creating art all of her life. As a child, she won scholarships to the Kansas City Art Institute and returned there for further studies after attending the University of Illinois and graduating from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Blitt’s art celebrates her love of nature, music, and dance and the spontaneous flow of movement captured in the drawn gesture.
Blitt has translated over 40 of her spontaneous drawings into monumental sculptures. These works, up to 60 feet in height, are held in collections at institutions including the sculpture garden at Gold Coast Regional Art Center, Australia; the National Museum Art Gallery, Singapore; the Hilton Tokyo Bay, Shiba, Japan; I-Lan City Hall, Taiwan R.O.C; and in Israel with the Haifa Symphony. Her paintings, sculptures and drawings have been shown in over 70 solo exhibitions and 50 group exhibitions around the world including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Uganda, China, and the United States. The sculpture, Inspiration, was a prizewinner at the Florence Biennale in 2005.
Inspired by a life-long interest in the performing arts, Blitt has partnered with musicians, composers, dancers, and choreographers on a variety of projects ranging from musical sculptures to art films. Caught in Paint (2003), a collaborative documentary with David Parsons, the Parsons Dance Company, and photographer Lois Greenfield, received 16 awards. The film was shown in 130 film festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, the ACA New Music Festival and by Moving Pictures Magazine at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2014 Blitt released Visions of My World, a compilation of nine art films and documentaries that feature collaborations with composer Michael Udow (Abyss of Time in 2013), cellist Yehuda Hanani (performing J.S. Bach Suites), and a multi-media collaboration with award-winning composer Lansing McLoskey, among others.
In 2014, Blitt launched an art gifting program designed to share her work with non-profit organizations in need of art to beautify and enliven their spaces.
