Susan Wasinger is an artist, photographer, author, and graphic designer with over thirty years of experience in visual and communication arts. Her award-winning designs have appeared in numerous design annuals, art-director's shows, and juried exhibitions. Susan has authored, photographed, and designed 7 arts and crafts books. Most recently, she was chosen for a exhibit of contemporary Colorado artists juried by the Director of the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. Susan studied Anthropology and Linguistics at the University of Colorado as well as studying Video and Film Production at the University of California Los Angeles. She further studied Art History at the British Institute in Florence Italy. Her fine art medium is encaustic, a mixture of beeswax, damar resin, pigments, oil, and metal foil applied with heat to birch board. The practice of encaustic art is some of the earliest painting known in history with beautifully preserved examples dating back almost 2000 years in Egypt and Greece. The richly layered surfaces and depth of color are two hallmarks of using this ancient form of paint. Susan takes the unique properties of the encaustic medium one step further by carving form into the thick layers of medium to make paintings that are tactile, textured, and evocative.
