Liz Thoresen

I began painting as a child, went on to study art and receive a Secondary Teaching Credential. I taught art in Australia, Philippines, and the United States. After teaching at middle school, high school and college level, I left teaching to marry and join my husband in owning and operating a veterinary clinic in Hillsboro, Oregon. I have never stopped painting but since retirement, have been able to immerse myself in my art and have exhibited my work locally and nationally.

I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and find inspiration from nature, the weather, conversations, quotations, colors, shapes, laughter, exercise and the sheer beauty of the world around me. The magic that happens when color blends on paper, canvas, or board excites me and leads me from painting to painting. One of the many challenges of creating abstract paintings is the continual dance between shapes, color, and line work. Laying down a color or shape immediately affects the areas nearby. It is this collaboration of mediums that I find so exciting. Starting a new painting is like traveling from one place to a new one and not knowing the destination until you realize you have arrived. From toning a canvas, making marks, and creating texture, it can be a struggle but it's always a personally enlightening experience.
