Aaron Stephens

I am a Husband and father of two daughters before everything else. I am a devout member of my Religion. I was a Paratrooper. I am an Army veteran of OEF 2007-2008. I was trained to operate and repair Fire-finder radar for the field artillery, 173rd ABCT, 4-319th AFAR.

I have worked in many various blue collar industries, from cashier at Wal-Mart to a Scrapyard. I spent most of my time in Shipping/receiving. I currently work in housekeeping at the Iowa City VA hospital’s Coralville clinic.

My first love is Comic Books, but thanks to social media, I do not want to work within that industry. I still love comics.

I am self-taught for the most part. I have taken a few classes in High School. In my time at The University of Iowa, as a Psychology I took two drawing, one painting and one printmaking class at the age of 32. The short amount of time I spent in those classes pales to almost nothing compared to the time and effort I spent developing my artistic skills and sensibilities.

When my abstract art has meaning behind it, neuroscience, high-strangeness and my Religion are major themes. My more representational works are images that try and tell a specific narrative first and foremost, even when doing a portrait. My abstract expressionist paintings are often fueled by the symptoms I must deal with on a daily basis, the souvenirs I brought with me from Afghanistan.

I claim no influence in my abstract styles. My comic book art was influenced by Jim Lee, Erik Larsen, Yoshiki Takaya, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and David Mack. My writing was influenced by Brian Bendis, Neal Stephenson, Piers Anthony, Robert Jordan, Alan Moore and Katshuhiro Otomo.
