Fileve Tlaloc

I am a multigenerational, creole South African-American artist born and raised in NYC. I have lived and worked in China, South Africa, and Latin America. I pursued a BFA at City College in Harlem, New York specializing in painting and ceramics. Throughout my artistic journey I studied photography, painting, and ceramics. As a result, I enjoy experimenting and engaging multiple media and blurring boundaries.
As a dual citizen of South Africa and America with origins in a creole community in KwaZulu-Natal province. I am also a trained anthropologist that does interdisciplinary work. My background and training fosters a unique perspective that increases the diversity of both artistic technique and cultural perspective.
In general, being an African-American woman that grew up in New York City among a diversity of people from the African diaspora, I find it important to tell stories that go beyond the stereotyped historical narratives that limit stories to slavery and conflict. My multicultural, multiethnic family origins enable me to incorporate and blend sacred and profane cultural symbols and practices to explore the human experience and individuals as a cultural beings and identities as a series of relationships, roles, and responsibilities.
