Hong Zhang

Chinese born and Lawrence KS based artist Hong Chun Zhang received BFA in Chinese ink painting at the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. After moving to the USA in 1996, she earned an MFA from the University of California Davis in 2004. Upon completing her graduate work, Hong continued painting in ink but also combined with new materials like charcoal and larger formats. In 2000, she developed her own "Hair" style that resulted in aesthetically rich and intellectually compelling works. Hong has been living in Lawrence KS with her family since finishing her MFA in 2004. She has shown her original work extensively across the globe for over 20 years including The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, The Contemporary Museum of Art Norway, The China National Art Museum and The Milan Royal Palace. Hong has also received a competitive Skowhegan Artist Residency Full Scholarship, a Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship and a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. In 2021 she was nominated for the USA fellowship. Public and private collections in Australia, Europe, and Asia have acquired her work for their permanent collections, and most recently the Harvard Art Museums, The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, KS and the Kansas City New Airport.
