I am intrigued by contrast, the play of dark against light, the pull of empty space against the inclination to fill it up, the placement of line and shape, balance.

My preferred medium is clay.
I love its responsive nature, its possibilities and its limitations. Clay gives me a set of rules to work within, providing both a familiarity and a challenge. Each of my pieces is a visual and tactile exploration of my materials. Increasingly, my work deals with surface and texture.

I think in sets.
I work within the framework of composition from the moment I go into the studio each morning. Often, individual compositions become components in a group as I consider the balance and relationship of one piece to another to form a larger composition. Each piece encourages the next in construction and composition.

My current work is stoneware with inlays of black and white stoneware. Additions to the raw surface can include slips, underglaze and high-temperature wire. Post firing additions can include acrylic paint, oil paint, cold wax and metal leaf.

I am a minimalist at heart, influenced by the long traditions of Asian pottery and British studio ceramics and most importantly by good design.
