Nina Bovasso was born and raised in NYC, and lives and works in NYC, NY.
Her colorful works on paper echo an urban cacophony where pattern and regiment have gone amok. Inspired by textiles, Utopian idealism and a 60’s pop sensibility, the obviousness towards the hand-made emphasize human touch and the tactile world. Creating several different bodies of work simultaneously in various mediums, the underlying theme of potential and inertia have consistently played an important role in Bovasso’s working process.
Ms. Bovasso received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, MFA from Bard College, and attended the Skowhegan School of Art in 1994. She exhibits her work internationally, recent solo exhibitions including Mulherin-Pollard Projects, New York City; Bravin Lee Programs, New York City; Galeria Casado Santapau, Madrid; Inman Gallery, Houston; Cleveland MOCA, Ohio, University Museum at SUNY Albany, New York; Galerie Schmela, Dusseldorf and Galerie Diana Stigter, Amsterdam. Group exhibitions include Out of Site, NewMuseum of Contemporary Art, NYC and Painters and Poets, Ulrich Museum, Wichita, KS. Ms. Bovasso has been the recipient of awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Louis Comfort Tiffany Artist Grant, New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Her work has been reviewed and collected widely in the US and abroad.
Ms Bovasso has held temporary visiting artist teaching positions at the University of Georgia, California College of Art, University of Virginia and Unversity of Tennessee, and presented lectures about her work at numerous educational institutions including Princeton University, Northwestern University and the University of Houston.
In June 2009, Bovasso established for 15 months a small storefront artist initiative in Amsterdam, 1K Projectspace, exhibiting the work of other artists from the Netherlands and abroad,
Previous Curatorial projects have been I love the BeNeLux, at Virgil de Voldere Gallery in New York City, 2009, including the work of 20 artists from the Benelux region, and in 1998, Bovasso curated Son-of-Guston, at Clementine Gallery in New York City, with 10 artists including Barry McGee, Pamela Fraser Ruth Root and Christian Schumann.
