Voyo Woo

Voyo Woo is a paper cutting artist based in Washington, DC. Born in a coastal city in Southeast China, Voyo moved to the United States in 2008. Voyo first learned paper cutting when she was 14 years old and later won first prize in China's "Shuanglong Cup" National Painting and Calligraphy Competition.

After coming to the US, she became actively involved in promoting Chinese paper cutting in America. In December 2011 she was invited to perform live paper cutting at the Freer & Sackler Galleries of Arts, Smithsonian. She was also invited to RawArtists DC Showcase in 2012, 2013. She has also been invited to speak at various events, including the China Fair at the Madeira School, the DC Photography 2011 Annual Event, and other private events.

This art form has a history of almost 2,000 years. Most of the paper cutting artists are poor farmers in rural areas who make about $200/month on the average. It's hard for them to make a living off paper cutting, fewer and fewer people are learning this art form. And this art is on the edge of disappearing.
