Alison Kysia

I am a socially engaged ceramic artist whose work centers Muslims & Islam. I am inspired by the beauty and spiritual sustenance embodied in Islamic beliefs, texts, and rituals, and I communicate my love of Islamic traditions in my artwork. I use atmospheric firing methods to capture marks that represent microcosms of the macrocosm, signifying the diversity of all encapsulated in the One. My love of clay is rooted in the Quran which says we are made from it, and my vessels seek to embolden our humanity and connection to one another by offering opportunities to contemplate the meaning and message of our lives. I challenge anti-Muslim bigotry and Islamophobia by sharing experiences of joy and enlightenment through my faith and the deep relationship I fosters as a Muslim in Muslim communities. In addition to ceramic sculpture and functional pottery, I design socially engaged art experiences & programming to nurture diverse multigenerational community & spiritual care.
