Anne Senstad

Anne K. Senstad is a multidisciplinary Norwegian born artist based in New York since 1990. She was educated at Parsons School of Design and The New School for Social Research in New York.
Senstad works in the multidisciplinary intersections of installation art, photography, video, site and time specific work, and land art. Her work is concerned with aesthetics of the sensorial, realms of the perceptive and transformative, transcendental ideas of art and philosophical practice - and social-political awareness. Since the mid 90’s her work has been concerned with perceptions of light, sound and color, a foundation for her explorations in the experiential and experimental. Her sources lie in literature, philosophy, technology and the phenomena of ocular perceptions.
In 2015 she participated in the inaugural Bruges Art and Architecture Triennale (BE) with an 80 ft long LED text based sculpture, GOLD GUIDES ME based on her research project Capitalism in the Public Realm. She also participated in the 56th Venice Biennale in 2 exhibitions: her solo exhibition The Vanity of Vanities for the inaugural opening exhibition of El Magazen dell’Arte and The Safina Project (a UAE Collaterali Eventi) organized by Alserkal Avenue in Dubai. In July 2015 participated in CULTURUNNERS RV Art Laboratory practicing the art of Calligraphy, as part of Edge of Arabia foundation, a 3 year cross cultural initiative between the US and the Middle East. In 2013 she participated in the 55th Venice Bienniale at Officina delle Zattere (Collaterali Eventi) in the exhibition Metamorphoses of the Virtual. In 2011 she completed a major public art commission in collaboration with the internationally renowned award winning architecture firm Snøhetta and Ohio State Arts Council Percent for Arts program, at The Wolfe Center for the Arts, BGSU, Ohio, consisting of 39 photographic panels covering the 930 ft lobby wall. Major exhibitions include Zhulong Gallery in Dallas, Abu Dhabi Art Hub,(UAE), Zendai Moma, Shanghai, ThisIsNotAgallery, Buenos Aires, SALT, Utsikten Kunstsenter and Stiftelsen 3,14 in Norway, Björn Ressle Gallery, Gary Snyder Gallery, Gallery nine5 and Elga Wimmer Gallery in New York, Pink Gallery in Seuol, KK Projects and Prospect 1 and 3 in New Orleans. Ongoing collaborations with composers include the electronic sound pioneer Catherine C. Hennix and renowned composer, producer and musician JG Thirlwell.

Her video work has been shown with Rencontres Internationales Paris/Madrid/Berlin at Centre Pompidou, Haus Der Kultur Der Welt, Berlin, Beirut Art Center, Lebanon. Other screenings and exhibitions include The Canadian Museum of Nature, Museum of Modern Art Ukraine in Kiev, Dallas Aurora TX, Video Arte Internacional Buenos Aires, Eva Peron Museum, Argentina, Oslo Screen Festival (NO) and ISEA Dubai 2014 (UAE).

Upcoming activities and exhibitions include Dallas Aurora Biennial 2015 (TX), a solo show at Solivagant Gallery, NY in November 2015, a solo show at ATHR gallery in Jeddah, KSA December 2015 and Bærum Kunsthall in Norway Oct 2016.

Senstad’s work is represented in gallery, public, institutional, corporate and private collections.
