BIOGRAPHY

Martin Blank has admired the grace and flow of the human form since childhood, digging into clay at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts at age 13. After earning a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1984, under the tutelage of Bruce Chow, Blank began his professional career creating with Dale Chihuly. There, he earned a place as an integral part of that team for 11 years before opening his own studio.

His work uncovers his personal evolution from the fundamental study of form and motion to a sensual dance with textures, form and energy that reflect the subtle, yet powerful resonance of human landscapes.

"I would call myself an intuitive artist. I work on the way forms relate to each other to cut a line in space that flows, turns and carries the eye around the piece. Sculpture is as much about the mass as the void."

Blank has swiftly establishing himself as one of America's most significant figurative sculptors. Blank's work is on display in galleries throughout the United States and in museum exhibitions at The Boston Museum of Fine Art, Montreal Museum of Fine Art, Corning Museum of Glass, Millennium Museum Beijing, The Shanghai Museum of Fine Art and the American Embassy in Slovakia. In 2004, The Lurie Company commissioned Martin to create a 48’ foot sculpture for the lobby of the prestigious 120 South LaSalle Street Building Chicago, IL. The sculpture is included in Chicago’s “Great Art and Architecture” city tour.

Currently, The Museum of Glass, WA has commissioned Blank to realize a monumental outdoor installation in the plazas 200’ foot reflecting pool. Blanks’ intent with the installation is to capture the emotive nature of water. Installing Spring 2009!
