Kim Boulukos

Kim Boulukos was born and lived in NY but is currently working and living in Nice, France. She studied lithography at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Potsdam, then studied sculpture at Georgetown University in Washington DC. After completing her Bachelor studies where she received high honors (magna cum laude, phi beta kappa) majoring in Fine Arts and minoring in Biology, Kim Boulukos completely changed directions and obtained a PhD in Biology at Georgetown University. Following several years of leading a successful career running a laboratory as a Molecular Biologist, Kim Boulukos returned to creating sculptures, first in fired ceramic or in fiberglass resin polyester, then in metal (steel, iron, aluminum or bronze). She completely abandoned the security of her tenured scientific position to create her art.
Kim Boulukos is often inspired by majestic animals like antelopes, horses and seahorses or by her playful "muse", a black pointer dog named Sato. Her animal sculptures have been described by different critics as being light and humoristic, or by having the airiness of Mediterranean fragrances and the height of Manhattan skyscrapers. Although without the details of having eyes, one has the impression that they curiously look at the viewer, they invite the viewer to contemplate them, yet they keep their distance, their reserve. There is something aristocratic about them with respect to their noble stances and their regard. Their stylization makes them seem unreal, yet they express a harmony and serenity that one rarely encounters.
Kim Boulukos: "When I make a sculpture or painting, I just want the viewer to laugh or feel good. In our daily lives we are constantly confronted with many mind boggling struggles then the world news too often bombards us with negative images that we should contemplate. With so many daily tragedies, we (at least I!!) lose hours of sleep. I want my work to counterbalance all of this--I don't want my work to be intellectual or conceptual, but relaxing, peaceful and uplifting".
Kim Boulukos is an international artist who has shown her work in one person or two people shows in galleries, public and private museums, and public and private outdoor places in Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Hungary, Monaco, Norway, Switzerland and in the US (New York) and her art work is found in public and private collections on the American, European and Australian continents.
