Catherine Courtenaye

My father was an American Foreign Service diplomat. He was also a brilliant linguist, and imparted to me the value of understanding cultures outside of the United States. This upbringing played out for me as a young artist influenced by everything from Japanese calligraphic art to the modern Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies. (I was born in Madrid, and my sister was born in Osaka.) I graduated from high school in Tangier, Morocco. The “look” of Arabic signage was perhaps my first awakening to the abstract power of line.

My work can be found in several museum collections, as well as in gallery exhibitions.
