FRANCES HYNES
ABBREVIATED CAREER NARRATIVE 2011

Frances Hynes was born in New York in 1945. She has had recent one-person exhibitions at the June Kelly Gallery (2009, 2004, 2001, 1999 and 1991). An upcoming exhibition is scheduled for the June Kelly Gallery in the spring of 2012. Between 1981 and 1993 she had seven one-person exhibitions at the Terry Dintenfass Gallery. Exhibits were also held at the Poindexter Gallery and the Institute for Contemporary Art, P. S. 1 Museum in Long Island City, NY in 1981; and at other museums and galleries throughout the years.

The artist was included in the American Academy of Arts and Letters Invitationals in 2007 and 1994; and in the National Academy Museum Invitationals in 2008, 2004 and 2000.

Her work is in museum, corporate and private collections including: Portland Museum of Art, ME; Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, ME; Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; The Queens Museum of Art, Flushing, NY; New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah, GA; AT&T, Chicago, IL; Alliance Capital Management, NY; the Poindexter Family Collections, NY; and others.

She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts, Artist’s Fellowship Award (1980) and the Edwin Palmer Award from the National Academy Museum in 2008. Hynes was Guest Artist at the Printmaking Workshop in 1985, and received other residency awards.

Hynes received an MA from New York University in 1968, a certificate from the Academy of Fine Arts, Florence, Italy in 1970 and attended the Art Students League in Woodstock, NY.

Hynes has served as a visiting artist and teacher at various institutions in the United States and abroad (Ireland and Finland). Currently she is adjunct associate professor at LaGuardia Community College of the City University of NY.

In 1978, Frances Hynes, along with a handful of other like minded artists, founded Independent Studios I, a cooperative workspace for artists in Long Island City, NY. Thirty-three years later it still exists: a stable, strong, non profit-institution, a viable example of artists coming together to provide for their workspace needs.

The work of Frances Hynes was selected to be in the Art in Embassies Program in 1973 and has been shown in:
