Helen Levin

I am a mature artist, emergent from the abstract tradition of the New York School. My recent paintings are inspired by the "gesture" of contemporary architecture. I try to capture in acrylic on canvas or paper the sense of movement, energy, and flow of light. I paint varied size works in acrylic, or oil on canvas and archival cotton paper. I also create collage of my hand-painted papers. I have been and am inspired by nature and music, particularly improvisational jazz.
I had my first six-month museum exhibition, a 2 person show with Golan Levin, new media artist. Title:" Gesture:in Paint and Software" at the Staten Island Museum in SI,NY. Have had 8 solo exhibitions, including at Espace Culturel (BNP Paribas) in Nice, France, Mikst Media Gallery in the Netherlands (Woudrichem),and Ceres Gallery in New York City. Also was in about 70 group exhibitions, including at Andre Zarre, Pleiades Gallery, Soho 20 Invitationals, Snug Harbor's Newhouse Gallery (SI, NY). I have curated nine large group exhibits, including for Chubb Insurance and Nabisco Brands Gallery, both in New Jersey. I have published articles on arts in Leonardo online, NY Arts magazines. My MFA and BFA are both in painting. (Columbia University '63, and Hunter College '62.)
My artwork is collected in the Staten Island Museum ( 2 paintings), and have artists books in both the Museum of Modern Art and Brooklyn Museum of Art. I was represented by paintingsdirect.com until its demise in 2008. In 2008 I have been the recipient of monetary awards in art from the Chenven Foundation (2008),the Dept of Cultural Affairs (NYC)in 1993 and 1994, Artists Space (1980), and Columbia University in 1963.
