Heather Rubinstein

As a practicing artist, my projects and intellectual interests are versatile: I create large-scale abstract, gestural paintings on recycled, thrift-store-found domestic fabrics; using discards from these paintings to create large-scale sewn textile painting-sculptures and installations as part of my painting practice. I write reviews on art, publish artist books, historical and critical books on movements in 20th century art, and collaborate and curate exhibitions with my spouse, New York-based, poet and art critic Raphael Rubinstein.

My academic training is in painting and art history, and I received both my BFA and MFA in Painting and Art History (1999, 2016), from the University of Houston. My paintings have been exhibited in one and two-person exhibitions, and numerous group exhibitions, in Houston, New York (and beyond). I have over a decade of teaching experience within higher-education, and extensive professional experience as a designer and creative director. I am a recipient of two City Artist Corps Grants from the City of New York in 2021, and an Artist's Relief Grant in 2020; The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Foundation for the Arts Grant (2017); Endowments from the Blain, LaRuth International Endowment Fund for the Arts and the Hohlt-Wich Endowment Fund for the Arts; and was awarded the National Graphic Design Award in 1999, and an American Advertising Award in 2008.

My studio is located at The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts on W39th Street in Manhattan.
