Irja Bodén

Irja Bodén was born in Kiruna, Sweden in 1960. She earned a B.F.A. from SUNY Potsdam and a B.A. from Lund University in Sweden. Bodén's artwork involves exploring combined ceramic forms that are stacked or nested with visible imprints underneath a thick glaze. Her work begins on the wheel and transforms into narrative-based abstract sculptures. Solo and two-person exhibitions include Al Held Foundation, Courthouse Gallery, Lake George, NY, and Ely Center of Contemporary Art, New Haven, CT. In 2023, Bodén had her second solo exhibition, Constellations, at Amos Eno Gallery. Her work has been included in group exhibitions such as the Hyde Collection, Glens Falls, NY; Al Held Foundation, Boiceville, NY; Art+Nature+Home with Upstate Diary, Stone Ridge, NY; University Place Gallery, Cambridge, MA; Samuel Dorsky Museum, SUNY New Paltz, NY, and Kin Museum for Contemporary Art, Kiruna, Sweden. Bodén has been awarded residencies, grants, and fellowships, including Byrdcliffe Artist in Residency, Woodstock, Studios at MASS MoCA, the Berkshire Taconic Foundation, and the NYSCA Public Art Fellowship. She currently lives in Hudson Valley, NY, and maintains an active studio practice.
