Joseph Filak

The only artist that really matters in America at the moment. He grew up in Cleveland Ohio area in a small steel town. He attend Cleveland State University BFA, The University of Notre Dame MA,and SUNY New Paltz MFA.
My work is a cross referenced the social and political state within the contemporary culture of the United States.I have begun to appropriate various visual languages and symbolism throughout art history and contemporary American culture in an attempt to invert; if not, integrate various contemporary motifs and there symbolic meaning upon the hubris of the decimate industrial base and workers mentioned. Within this framework of industrial cultural consciousness, or better yet, cultural capital, that I seek to; through a sort of, “Gag Reflex” show the current state of affairs within society as I perceive them. I view my moment in time as a way to unravel the cultural reality and the cultural myth that has been “Candy Coated’ or better yet, “Eye Candied” to subvert the factual nature within America currently. The forms used show material in a state of decay, imploding, exploding, yet the denial of this factual occurrence, is shown through an over the top aesthetic approach. This strategy is through color, material, and appropriation to show a cautionary warning to the excessive disregarding culture of the couple past decades. I set this forth in a diorama to achieve cohesive discourse within my work. Through this approach, I hope to unmask a consciousness of complacency and denial within our culture, one that specifically deals with the “Gag Reflex” suitable for our times.
