Jo Lucas statement:
I have traveled from the top of the earth to the bottom, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, from Cambridge to Kazakstan. I paint landscapes. They are big. They show wild, illimitable space, territory with no human presence, a place that of safety that belongs to us all and where we all belong.

My passion is for paint, the painting process, for its never ending methods and outcomes, to serve as a bridge for discussion of universal themes about identity and belonging. I use broad, gestural mark making to charge the composition with a dynamism that reflects the power of the natural world and that celebrates the physical act of painting itself. It is my own personal preference to use only the primary colours. I use no manufactured black pigment. Red, yellow and blue alone create each and every dark tone. Overall I splash, drip, wash and fling paint to create a scape that remains open to your personal interpretation.

I offer my gigantic canvases of wilderness to envelop and transport you-perhaps from your metropolitan life. One client tells me the images are like a refuge from 24/7 connectivity where they can lose themselves, recharge. I hope the imagery says even more, that they speak about our place on earth and our journey to find a physical sanctuary as well as an emotional one.

In 1997 I had the fortune to exhibit with HRH Prince Charles who said,
"In an age of computerized reproduction, it is the intensely natural combination of the human hand and eye which still produces the irresistible, idiosyncratic textures of paint that strike a particular chord in the deeper parts of our being." (HRH Prince Charles for Discerning Eye, Mall Galleries,London)

I wish to strike a chord that will raise awareness of migration, landscape imagery that symbolizes home.
