Marissa Motola

I was born in New York City and enjoyed drawing from a young age. When I was seven years old, my family moved to Mexico City. The colors, texture and music in the markets and small
villages made a strong impression on me.
A childhood illness which required 2 months of rest deepened my interest in art as I entertained myself with doll making, embroidery and beadwork. At age sixteen I attended the Negrete
Institute of Art in San Miguel De Allende and studied painting, life drawing and stained glass.
Later I returned to New York, spending time at the Art Students League in the evening while working as a tutor for at-risk teenagers, and an art counselor at the NYC Children’s Museum. After obtaining a scholarship, I attended and graduated from the School of Visual Arts.
After marriage , I returned to school, This time for nursing and graduated as an RN from Piedmont Virginia Community College in 1997.
Growing up in Mexico has remained an influence on my perception, feeling and sense of the world. I have lived in Crozet,VA for 23 years with my husband and 2 daughters.
I have worked as a nurse for the past 17 years but continue to work on art in my free time.
In recent years, I have traveled to and explored the island of Iona in Scotland? following my
interest in Gaelic spirituality and culture. These recent experiences and impressions have
influenced the artwork in my last show.
I have worked primarily with oil, silk and mixed media.
