Laurie Spencer

Laurie Spencer is best known for her sculptural organic ceramic whistles and large scale ceramic domes which are built and fired on site. The largest of these is the Calyx Dome, an 18’ tall fired ceramic dome sculpture built with the collaboration of artist Daniel Cajamarca. Most recently she completed an 8' ceramic dome in Perrysburg, Ohio. Ms Spencer has exhibited her work internationally and been featured in several books and magazines. She received her MA and BFA in ceramics from the University of Tulsa. She currently teaches ceramics at Holland Hall and works at her studio in Tulsa. During her career, Ms Spencer has received many awards including the New Forms Regional Initiative Grant; the Fellowship Award in Crafts from the Mid-America Arts Alliance / National Endowment for the Arts. She has also been awarded several teaching residencies such as the Americans for the Arts, Community Residency Exchange Program in Buncrana, Ireland working with children and adults in large-scale ceramic sculptures; the Lila Wallace-Readers Digest International Artist Program Grant and Arts International - a 6-month residency for research and teaching in Ecuador, and a whistle making residency with the Connecting Communities program at the John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. In 2007, Spencer was invited to lead a fire sculpture workshop and demonstration at the International Ceramics Festival at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre in Wales.
