Alexander Hahn

Alexander Hahn (b. 1954, Rapperswil, Switzerland) has worked in the realm of media arts since the late 1970s. He is an alumnus of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, New York (1981). He lives and works in New York.

The subject of Hahn's art is the everyday. Sourced from his daily, accidental video recordings, processed and transformed in the computer, he creates works that span video, installation, computer graphics and print, animation, virtual reality, and writing. They combine the personal with the universal, seamlessly merging individual memory, imagination and dream with the broader motifs of science and history. Subjected to the transformative power of digital technologies, they unveil the remarkable and extraordinary aspects inherent in our everyday lives, the hidden dimensions of reality, and turn ordinary experiences into profound reflections on human existence.

Hahn's work has been seen in museums and media festivals worldwide, in institutions like the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, National Art Museum of China in Beijing, or the Kunsthaus Zürich. He's had major retrospectives at the Kunstmuseum Solothurn, Switzerland, Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria, the Padiglione d'Arte Moderna in Ferrara, Italy. A recent highlight was his survey at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland, in 2022/2023, titled «Memory of Light - Light of Memory.»

Hahn is a recipient of numerous awards, including the New York Foundation for the Arts, multiple grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, namics Art Prize, Production Grant from the Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland, the Swiss National Grant, Prize for Young Swiss Art, Swiss National Grant and a DAAD Fellowship in Berlin. His art is part of prestigious collections such as the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, UBS Art Collection, New York, WGBH Boston, Collection Nestlé, Vevey, and Kunsthaus Zürich.
