Martin Donlin

I am a glass artist working on large scale site specific artworks, I have completed and project
managed a large number of commissions in the UK, Europe and the USA. I work in a number of
situations including, windows, screens and glass walls. I have all necessary insurances and Tax certificates to work in the USA.

The majority of the projects I produce are intended to work on a variety of levels, with bold images for impact yet containing small intricate details to be seen close up. In previous projects I have collaborated with local writers and poets to tell the story of the local area that in turn have inspired my artwork.

The intention would be to create artworks that are welcoming and accessible and do not alienate visitors or locals, but can still remain exciting and have a sense of adventure. I design concepts that relate to the specific architectural environment and can echo the architectural style and feel for a building.

Through image, form and text the artwork could:
* Relate to the physical characteristics and location of the site.
* Refer to the historical heritage and meaning of the site.
* Act as a marker establishing an identity for the site, creating a sense of place.
Be relevant and accessible to the users of the site.
Look forward to the future with a bright and optimistic vision.
Or Not, many of my projects are completely abstract inspired by the location and the function
of the building.

In a recent scheme in Minneapolis I commissioned a local poet to compose a poem that described the history and diversity of the local community and etched parts of the poem into the glass in multi cultural languages for visitors to discover in the artwork. While in Indianapolis I worked with a writers group who created poems about flight: dreams of far-off places and thoughts of homecoming. Much of the text is etched onto the glass to be “discovered” by visitors

Many of these elements are used as a metaphor or then abstracted using a variety of treatments and materials to create an atmosphere or ambiance. Many of my projects involve community
participation, others are designed to a given brief.

As with all projects I am involved with, the designs and technical aspects are developed upon close consultation with all concerned and detailed concepts are then generated. I am a frequent visitor to the USA, so travel and expenses would not be prohibitive to my practice.
