Matt Babcock

I have been sculpting in metal since 1987. I have learned to work in many media, but I keep coming back to the welding shop. My goals as a sculptor are to illuminate nature by distilling the structure and behavior of animals and plants, and to create complex, changing impressions using simple materials.

My work generally has an active or functional aspect. I enjoy the analysis and planning necessary to achieve the desired motion in kinetic sculptures.

I am also a licensed architect, with experience managing large and small projects and coordinating with building owners, government agencies, and other stakeholders.

In addition to architecture, I have training in engineering, metal fabrication, mathematics, and art history. My art reflects my lifelong interest in nature and how things work.
