Nicole Lenzi

In the Garden and Backyard Shadow Happenings series are responses to light fluctuations in my garden and yard. Tracing these by hand and recording with a camera marks the ephemeral and brings forth overlooked wonders. In Shadow Happenings, sunlight is recorded by tracing shadows (by hand and camera) as it moves in relation to plants over set increments of time. Timing the drawing activity allows for uninterrupted mark making and greater concentration on “being” while working (rather than “doing”). Marking the shifts in light encourages staying fully present in the experience. Drawings and photographs are juxtaposed in a given space to set up dialogues.

Nicole Lenzi works between mediums and dimensions to expand the concept of drawing. She is interested in how drawing, time, space, and thinking can affect and redevelop each other. Lenzi has exhibited nationally in the United States and internationally. Her current series Backyard and Garden Shadow Happenings explore how drawings can emerge from light and shadow interactions in her yard. Lenzi has had residencies at Montalvo Arts Center and Soaring Gardens and earned a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University (1995) and M.F.A. from Maryland Institute College of Art (2007).
