Olivia Wieland

I imagine the tension and compression that are in the folds of geologic structures to be a visualization of anxiety’s chaotic forces. My works map a psychological landscape that is rooted in autobiographical narratives, organic patterns, and intense mark making. By combining prints of mushrooms with drawings of rocks, I paint forms that are loosely based on geologic structures. I am interested in the voids and pockets rocks form on both micro and macro scales. The discrepancy in material placement and ambiguity of physical form is part of my personal language that I use to describe dissociation, hallucinations, and anxiety that has influenced my perception of life around me. My work is a reflection of how I live with major fluctuations in mental health.
