Sculptor-photographer Stephen Althouse creates simple assemblages of old worn objects relating to human activity, and utilizes large-format b&w film photography and wide-format inkjet printing to transmute his subjects into larger-than-life minimalist monuments to our species.

Raised on a rural Pennsylvania farm and having laborious jobs in his youth, Althouse earned his MFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University and BFA degree in Sculpture from the University of Miami. He has traveled, resided, and created on three continents using Miami as his base. He utilizes his experiences with humanity as inspiration, his sculptural tradition of manipulating and arranging subject matter, and large-format film photography combined with subtle digital manipulation to create his unique metaphoric art.

In 2003-2004 he held the position of artist-in-residence at the Museé d’Art moderne et d’Art contemporain, Liège, Belgium through a Fulbright Grant, and has received additional artists grants from Epson printers, Hahnemühle papers, and Innova papers. Since 2007 he has relocated to central Pennsylvania to develop new ideas for his artwork stimulated by close interaction with the Amish community.

Althouse’s exhibition activity has been accelerating, having many solo museum exhibitions during recent years scheduled through spring of 2021. His works are in the permanent collections of numerous museums in North America, South America, Europe, and most recently Asia.
