Sherry Selevan

ARTIST STATEMENT:
As an artist and a scientist, I look at glass’ duality: an amazing mysterious material that responds to gravity and variations of heat – sometimes predicable, sometimes not. As I’ve explored the behavior of glass, I’ve learned that my pieces are a collaboration -- my kiln and I both do our part. Sometimes, we don’t agree on the final form; then I explore the secrets that allow me to create my vision. It’s an exciting journey.

PROCESS:
My work is kiln formed, with multiple steps from design, cutting glass, and fusing it together at temperatures up to 1500 degrees F. After that, imagery may be added or textures, a variety of warm (kiln-formed) and cold-working techniques (sawing, smoothing, sandblasting). Depending on the piece, this process may be repeated a number of times.

BIOGRAPHY:
As a child, Sherry Selevan was interested in all aspects of “making” . . . everything from painting and sewing to taking lamps apart and rebuilding them. Solving “puzzles” has always been a major thrust, from her art work to her career as an environmental epidemiologist in the Public Health Service.
After years of working in different media, Sherry Selevan discovered fused glass in 2006. She brings all of that experience into her work in glass. Additionally, her background in science gives her insight into the behavior of glass when heated and manipulated. She has studied with nationally and internationally-recognized glass masters. Her work is sold at ArtfulHome.com and galleries in the Washington, DC area, has been exhibited in invitational and juried shows, appeared in print, received awards, and recently was a Niche finalist.

She is active in the glass community as a Resident Artist and Teacher at the Art Glass Center at Glen Echo National Park (Glen Echo, MD) and serves as President of the National Capital Art Glass Guild (www.ncagg.org).
