John Fraser

I work within the disciplines of Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, and Photography. My camera-work has informed my work in other disciplines, primarily collage of one form or another. My earliest exhibited work was in photography, an area of my practice begun in the 1970's, re-initiated in 2002. My mixed-media works are physical objects that possess a dominant structural form and facture, while my photographs are color compositions of forms and shapes found within human-made structures that are in a state of retreat.

I received a BA from Roosevelt University, and a MFA from Northern Illinois University. My work is currently represented by galleries in Chicago, La Jolla, Nashville, and Fort Worth, in the USA, and in Munich,Germany.

My first one-person exhibition was in 1980, and to date I have had one-person exhibitions throughout the USA and in Munich, Germany, and in group exhibitions throughout the USA, and in Germany, Spain, England, Japan, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, and Hungary. My work is held in public and private collections throughout the USA, in public collections in Spain and Canada, and in private collections in Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, and Scotland.

My work has been awarded Fellowships and Grants from Arts Midwest/National Endowment for the Arts, and the Illinois Arts Council, and I have been an Artist in Residence at YADDO, Illinois State University, twice at the MacNamara Foundation, and at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts.

As an educator, I have been an adjunct professor at Northern Illinois University, and Dominican University. In addition, I have been a Visiting Artist at colleges and universities in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, California, Utah, West Virginia, Michigan, Arkansas, Nebraska, and the University of Alberta, Edmonton in Canada.
