Suzy Taekyung Kim

Suzy Taekyung Kim was born in Daegu, South Korea and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and a Bachelor of Education from University of British Columbia.  She graduated from New York University (NYU) with a Master of Arts in Art Education.  She is the recipient of several national and international awards including the Scholarship for North American Scholars.  After her master’s degree, she worked as an art educator at Asian American Arts Centre.  She instructed the Step-by Step art program for immigrant children in Chinatown in New York City (NYC).
 
Her works can be found in a select number of private and corporate collections in Canada, Great Britain, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.  In 2016, she completed a public art commission entitled "Frolic in the Clouds of Encore" for a local gifted and talented elementary school in Cambria Heights in Queens, New York.  It was awarded from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Percent for Art Program in collaboration with the NYC School Construction Authority.  Kim’s installation has been inspiring the local communities by creating a dreaming space that provides an uplifting visual interaction.
 
In 2017, she successfully created a public art commission entitled “The Waltz” for the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha, Nebraska.  Placed in the grand lobby, this work is the entry point of the hospital by warmly welcoming all and has activated the setting with much needed positivity and vibrancy.
 
During the pandemic in 2021, Kim installed a 53 foot long public art painting for the Los Angeles (LA) County Department of Mental Health in Koreatown, LA.  Commissioned by the LA County Department of Arts and Culture, “Canopy of Blooms” celebrates the life stories of Koreatown residents across generations inviting viewers to find moments of harmony, hope, and healing under a covering of wildflowers.
