Taj Mattingly

Taj moved to Kansas City from the DC area in 1999 to attend KCAI, graduating in 2003 with a degree in Illustration & Graphic Design. Following graduation he and several other artists began Visual Dominations Studios. Over the next decade Taj worked as a fashion and book cover illustrator, a concept artist and he helped others bring their own creative visions to fruition. He also worked for several years designing a variety of commercial signs, where he familiarized himself with the commercial printing industry.

An accident that injured his dominant hand in the summer of 2016 lead Taj to pursue his passion of working with more traditional media in self motivated projects, and he is currently enjoying the process of creating art in new ways.

Taj’s current work uses bold, expressive marks to give the work a sense of movement that is both purposeful and unavoidable. In all of his work he pushes for a balance between overwhelming intention and calm.
